Recent work has highlighted the potential for mass timber products to deliver a suite of environmental and economic benefits across the forestry and construction sectors. However, there is significant uncertainty surrounding whether optimal forest policy should favor minimizing wood harvest to maintain carbon storage, or development of new markets for long-lived wood products to maximize potential sequestration rates. The Nature Conservancy is leading research and outreach projects to investigate how potential increases in mass timber production could affect forests and develop safeguards to mitigate any negative impacts.
